We have published a new club calendar! (in the menu) This is a central place to keep track of all our various events. Speaking of events we have two big ones this week, First we have the launch of the all new 2010 Honda Insight at Midlands Honda on Tuesday, March 24, 2009. The Insight originally launched in as a 2000 model and was designed for maximum fuel efficiency and still has yet to be matched by any production car. The vehicle exited production in 2006. Four years later and the Insight is ready for a major re introduction as a hybrid for everyone; and what it no longer achieves the ultimate in fuel efficiency, it makes up for with functionality and great pricing. On Saturday the 28th we will participate in our second Earth Fare Spring event, last year we had great success with the Earth Day celebration and that event is also when we launched this website, first posting. We took two hybrids last year a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid and a 2008 HCHII with navigation. This year we plan to take two hybrids again, we will have a 2009 HCHII w/ Navi and depending on supply a 2010 Honda Insight! Earth Fare’s Press release follows after the jump. |

The first little signs of spring are starting to show; first, as you can tell from the tree in my yard, the local plants and birds are starting to act as if spring has been here for several weeks. My 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid (HCHII) is also getting in on this springtime action. On my way home last night, I pulled 61+ MPG until my last errand of the night, where I dropped down to 58.6 MPG. |

Pricing for the new 2010 Honda Insight (HI2) was released on March 10, and today I will cover that information and give my take on the numbers. I received the information at 22:00 and wanted to confirm it at work before posting. The news appeared to break early and came from third party sources, several hours later Honda Press made the official announcement. The on Sale date is March 24th, just a few days from now! The Honda Insight Blog reports: Dick Colliver, our executive vice president, said, “The all-new Honda Insight brings the cost-of-entry for hybrid technology into reach for an entirely new car-shopping audience. In addition to making good environmental sense, hybrid technology is now entering a new era where it can also make financial sense for a broader range of customers.” If you want to add features like alloy wheels, cruise control, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, an upgraded audio system with six speakers, a USB audio interface [3], and much more, you can upgrade to the Insight EX with an MSRP of $21,300 [1]. 2010 Honda Insight Pricing and EPA Data Model MSRP[1] | EPA[2] | City/Hwy/Combined | Insight LX | $19,800 | 40/43/41 | Insight EX | $21,300 | 40/43/41 | Insight EX with Navi | $23,100 | 40/43/41 |

I would like to start today by looking at the new Insight’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) Battery Pack. The 2010 Insight, (Insight II or Insight Second Gen, or HI2) is equipped with the latest version of the Honda IMA Hybrid system. The vehicle is not designed to compete with another company’s flagship hybrid; Honda’s Civic Hybrid is tasked with that. This is the First modern hybrid available for under $20,000 MSRP. IMA system Voltage (aka IMA Battery Voltage) is just over 100 volts this year (100.8v) versus the 158 volts found in the 2006-2009 Civic Hybrid. The Insight pack puts out 1770 watts and holds 5.75 Amp Hours of energy versus the 1380 watts of output at 5.5 Ah capacity found in the current Civic Hybrid. It does this with just seven battery modules in the pack compared with the Civic Hybrid’s 11 modules; one module is composed of 12 cells. Pack weight shrinks from 68 pounds to 45 pounds. |

Midlands Honda and Midlands Hybrid have embarked on a new journey in the world of social media. You have to go where the people are and social media has survived the initial novelty where people would post things like “Just finished a bowl of cereal” or “My cat fluffy looked at me funny”. Those constant streams of useless information bites have been replaced with actual content worth reading and useful status updates like this one from Paul Thurrott on twitter, “At Logan for flight to Denver. Hate United. Fees for 1st bag & seat w/extra legroom (incl exit row). Would never fly this carrier by choice”, it lets us know a couple of things, he has arrived at one point on his journey safely and, we now know how he feels now, short and sweet. |

Just a quick update today: First, Midlands Honda and The Midlands Hybrid Club will participate in this year's Earth Fare Earth Day Celebration to raise awareness for environmental stewardship, as well as “Promoting the Spread of Clean Personal Transportation Technologies”. Also I have the results from the winter fuel economy challenge I was participating in. I received the “Lives In his Car” designation travelling more miles than anyone in all three divisions of the competition. “Lives In His Car: Kacey Green in his 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid. 6993 miles in 3 months.” |
