Winterizing your vehicle: Warm-up PDF Print E-mail

Today I talk about the effects of a good warm-up on fuel economy, and how to maintain your mileage while suffering the warm-up hit that affects all vehicles.

Colder weather is starting to hit our area.  I wanted to take a minute to discuss warming up your car.  The best way to warm any modern automobile, especially a hybrid, is by driving it for a minute or two, not letting it sit idle in your driveway or parking spot.  Idling a diesel actually allows it to lose temperature.

A vehicle with a clean and waxed exterior will hold its luster for years to come, however the winter season comes with conditions that are less than ideal for a vehicle’s exterior. There are several reasons that winter weather is damaging to a vehicle’s exterior: the first reason is that in cold weather car owners tend to wash the vehicle less often, dirt and grime help degrade the paint faster. With less frequent washings comes the chance that any paint protections such as wax will wear off before being re-applied. Another reason for damage during the winter is during inclement weather there may be harsh chemicals flying up from the road surface onto the paint or water freezing to the painted surfaces as frost, or even sleeting and unprotected paint is especially vulnerable to any abrasion from ice or harsh chemicals.

MPGfest!

My 2009 Civic Hybrid and many Prius lined up for MPGfest.

For the weekend of 10.10.2008-10.13.08 I met up with CincyMPG (the hypermiling club out of the Cincinnati metro area)  There were several speakers and driving clinics.  We had plenty of antics to keep ourselves entertained ,Austin has admitted to his wrongdoings.  Under the misunderstanding that my camera was left back at work I only snapped a few pictures with my cell phone (the camera was in my trunk the whole time with two sets of fully charged batteries).
